Weathering a Storm

by | Oct 21, 2024 | Care Villages

Strong winds, toppled trees, damaged property, and with more than 10 inches of rain in 4 days last August, Hurricane Debby left a trail of destruction in eastern North Carolina.

Not realizing that our part of the State would see so much rain throughout the week, Care Village members gathered for a day of baking cookies, so that our homebound members could be blessed. After a morning of laughter and baking, Care Village members fellowshipped over lunch.

I encouraged everyone to make sure they had their disaster preparedness kits ready for Hurricane Debby. Most felt the storm would not be so bad, but they wanted to be prepared just in case. As the rain poured during our baking and lunch at the Care Village, members grabbed to-go boxes of treats and set out the door to make their deliveries to homebound members.

The NCBAM Care Village of Kinston checked on 76 members during the Hurricane. You might be asking, how can one NCBAM director do that? Well, it takes a village to take care of one another!
I called, emailed, and texted members to make sure they were okay as the rain continued for the next few days. Care Village members also kept in touch with one another and kept me updated on how everyone was weathering the storm.

One of our members, Rev. Gene Miller, age 90, told me that he and his wife Edna appreciated being checked on and felt blessed by the support of other Care Village members.

The Kinston Care Village community is designed to take care of one another through care, support, Christian spirituality, wellness, and engagement. If you live within a 50-mile radius of Kinston and would like to join or learn more about the Village, email me at [email protected]
